THIRTY ONE

“She’s not coming,” Maya said, with a flat voice. She had so many emotions rolling around inside of her, she couldn’t let any of them come out. Otherwise, she knew she would fall apart. She had to go back to being the woman without emotions, the one that lived a life of the dead while living. She wasn’t sure she could do that anymore.

She had kept herself in line all these years. She kept her self-imposed rules so that Ginny could be happy. Well, not self-imposed. They were Dradon rules, but she had kept them.

And look at where it had gotten them, she moaned inside herself. Ginny, her beloved. The one thing that was important in her life was not coming. She had failed at everything. The contempt Maya felt for herself was so overwhelming she wished she would stop breathing. Die right then and there. What was the point of going on? She had failed. Her daughter wasn’t coming. She had chosen not to come. Maya was sure that Ginny had decided to see her new friend Fred instead. She didn’t know why, but it didn’t matter. And then Maya realized perhaps it did matter. Maybe she wasn’t coming because she couldn’t come.

The moan she had been keeping inside escaped, filling the entire space of the coffee shop. Everyone turned to look. She didn’t care. She couldn’t stop.

It was Pax who stood, pulled Maya to her feet, and, gathering her in his arms, led her outside to a bench under the one tree on the block.

Ceya and Koda looked at each other, both of them thinking the same thing—what Maya must have realized. Ginny wasn’t coming because someone was stopping her, and perhaps Pax was the right person for this mission after all.
